The “Patriot Trail” is a loop in the barn quilt trail dedicated to all U.S.
Veterans and troops. Every square on this loop is painted in red,
white and blue to honor our defenders of freedom. Construction of the
Patriot Trail began in September 2008. A minimum of 15 barn quilt
squares are planned for the trail.
Squares listed below are in the order they are displayed, traveling west
on Quicks Run Rd. from Ky. 8.
Local VFW Post 5438 has sponsored the five barn quilts painted in the
images of the flags of the United States Armed Forces (see below).

Local VFW Post #5438 has sponsored
the five barn quilts painted in the
images of the flags of the United States
Armed Forces, plus their own flag,
mounted at the post's facility.
This barn marks the beginning of the
"Patriot Trail," which follows Quicks
Run Road to Tollesboro. The "Stars &
Stripes" pattern was designed and
painted directly on the barn siding by
local artist and teacher Dan McCane.
The stars are made of plywood and
are mounted to the barn siding, giving
the square a dimensional look.
This square is sponsored by a local
teacher and "Army Mom" to honor her
son's service to his country. The
barn, built by day laborers during the
Great Depression, sits amid a
300-acre farm owned by the same
family for five generations. The timber
was harvested from the farm and
milled on site.
The log cabin pattern was chosen by
the owner as an endearing reminder of
her mother-in-law, a lifelong quilter
who crafted a large quilt in her favorite
pattern, the log cabin, and presented it
to the couple as a gift of love.
The Navy flag has special meaning for
this barn's owner. Both husband and
son served in the navy; the husband in
the 1960s during the Cuban Missile
Crisis and son in the Persian Gulf War
in the 1990s. Both were injured in the
line of duty.

This 107 year old six-bent barn sits
amid the 99-acre farm which spans
both sides of Quicks Run. The
property also includes a Native
American Indian grave at the top of the
hill. The owner chose the Cross &
Crown pattern as a favorite from a quilt
made decades past by her
mother-in-law.
